How to Measure a Room for Flooring, Paint and Drywall
One room, measured once, feeding four different calculators — and the six mistakes that send people back to the store.
Most material mistakes aren't math mistakes. They're measuring mistakes: a closet nobody counted, a wall measured at the baseboard instead of the wall, a room assumed to be square that isn't. This guide walks through one ordinary bedroom and carries the same measurements through flooring, paint, drywall, and wallpaper, so you can see exactly where each material wants a different number.
What you need
- A 25-foot tape measure, or a laser measure if you have one. Lasers are faster and more accurate across a room; tapes are better along a wall with furniture in the way.
- Paper and a pencil. Sketch the room from above before you measure anything. Write every dimension on the sketch, not on scraps.
- One unit, and stick to it. Feet-and-inches is fine, but convert to decimal feet before multiplying: 14 feet 6 inches is 14.5 feet, not 14.6. Inches ÷ 12 gives the decimal.
The example room
A bedroom that measures 14′ 6″ by 11′ 3″ at its longest points, with 8-foot ceilings, a 3′ × 5′ reach-in closet, one door, and two windows. That's a real room, not a tidy one, which is the point.
Floors: area, including the parts you'd forget
Floor area is length × width — but measured wall to wall at the longest points, not between baseboards, and not between the furniture. Then add every space that also gets flooring: closets, doorway recesses, the floor under a built-in, the bay window nook.
- Main room: 14.5 × 11.25 = 163.1 sq ft
- Closet: 3 × 5 = 15 sq ft
- Total floor: 178 sq ft
L-shaped rooms: split the shape into two rectangles along the inside corner, measure each, and add. Never measure the two long sides and multiply — that gives you the area of a rectangle that doesn't exist, and it's always too big.
Rooms that aren't square (which is most of them in older houses): measure both long walls and both short walls. If they differ by an inch or two, use the longer of each pair. Flooring cuts to fit; a shortfall doesn't.
Waste comes next, and it depends on the material and pattern — that's its own guide. For a straight-lay plank floor at 10%: 178 × 1.10 = 196 sq ft, which at 20 sq ft per box is 10 boxes. The flooring calculator does this with the pattern waste built in.
Walls: perimeter × height, minus what isn't wall
Wall area is the room's perimeter multiplied by the ceiling height. Perimeter is the sum of all four walls — for a rectangle, 2 × (length + width).
- Perimeter: 2 × (14.5 + 11.25) = 51.5 ft
- Gross wall area: 51.5 × 8 = 412 sq ft
Now subtract the openings, using the standard estimating allowances rather than measuring each one: 20 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window. One door and two windows is 50 sq ft.
- Net wall area: 412 − 50 = 362 sq ft
Whether to subtract the closet: the closet's back and side walls are wall too. If you're painting inside the closet, add its perimeter (16 ft × 8 = 128 sq ft, minus its door). If you're not, leave it out. Most people paint the closet and forget to count it.
For paint
Multiply by the number of coats, then divide by coverage. Two coats on 362 sq ft is 724 sq ft of coverage; at a typical 350 sq ft per gallon that's just over two gallons. Buy two gallons and a quart, or three gallons if you want touch-up stock from the same batch. Coverage drops on texture, bare drywall, and dark-to-light color changes — the paint calculator adjusts for those.
For drywall
Drywall uses the same net wall area — 362 sq ft — plus the ceiling if you're doing it, which is simply the floor area again: 163 sq ft. At 32 sq ft per 4 × 8 sheet with 10% waste: walls alone are 13 sheets; walls and ceiling are 18. The drywall calculator adds the mud, tape, and screws.
For wallpaper — the exception
Wallpaper is the one material where you don't subtract doors and windows. Paper goes up in full-height strips, and the strips beside and above an opening are still full strips; the offcuts around a window are rarely reusable because of the pattern. The wallpaper calculator works from perimeter, height, and pattern repeat instead of square feet, which is how a paperhanger does it.
Ceilings
A flat ceiling has the same area as the floor: 163 sq ft here. Sloped or cathedral ceilings are larger than the floor beneath them — measure the actual sloped surface, or for a symmetrical gable, treat it like a roof: floor area × the pitch multiplier, which the roof pitch guide explains.
The six mistakes that cause a second trip
- Measuring at the baseboard. Baseboards stick out. Hold the tape against the wall above them, or subtract their thickness twice.
- Forgetting the closet. A reach-in closet adds 8–15 sq ft of floor and over 100 sq ft of wall. It's the most common omission we hear about.
- Assuming the room is square. Measure every wall. In an older house the two "identical" walls routinely differ by an inch or more.
- Rounding down. Round every measurement up to the next inch, and every purchase up to the next full unit. Materials can be cut; they can't be stretched.
- Mixing units. 11′ 3″ is 11.25 ft. Writing it as 11.3 makes the room 7 inches longer than it is — small on one wall, real money on a whole floor.
- Subtracting openings for wallpaper. See above. It's the material where the normal rule reverses.
