How to Find Your Roof Pitch Without Climbing On It

Pitch is the number that turns a building's footprint into its roof area — and the one most people guess. Four ways to measure it with your feet on something solid.

A roof is bigger than the house under it, because it slopes. How much bigger depends entirely on the pitch, and the difference isn't small: a 12/12 roof has 41% more surface than the footprint it covers. Guess 6/12 when it's really 8/12 and you've under-ordered shingles by 7%. This guide covers what pitch means, four ways to measure it without a ladder to the ridge, and what the resulting multiplier does to an order.

What pitch means

Roof pitch is written as rise over 12: how many inches the roof rises for every 12 inches it runs horizontally. A 4/12 roof rises 4 inches per foot; a 12/12 roof rises 12 inches per foot, which is a 45° slope. Most American houses fall between 4/12 and 8/12.

Four ways to measure it

1. From inside the attic (most accurate)

Hold a 12-inch level horizontally with one end touching the underside of a rafter. Level it. Measure straight down from the far end of the level to the rafter. That vertical distance, in inches, is your pitch: 6 inches means 6/12. Use a 24-inch level and halve the reading if you have one; it's more precise.

2. At the eave, from a ladder

Same method, using the rafter tail or the bottom edge of the roof deck where it overhangs the wall. You're standing on a ladder at gutter height, not on the roof. Keep the level touching the roof surface or the underside of the sheathing, not the fascia board, which is usually plumb-cut and will fool you.

3. From the gable end, with a tape

Measure the width of the house at the gable wall and the height from the top of the wall to the ridge. Half the width is the run; the ridge height above the wall is the rise. Pitch = rise ÷ run × 12. A house 30 feet wide whose ridge sits 7½ feet above the wall plate: 7.5 ÷ 15 × 12 = 6, so 6/12. This works from the ground with a long tape if you can sight the ridge and wall-top against a window or trim line.

4. From the ground, with a phone

Stand square to the gable end. Open a level or angle-finder app, hold the phone against a straightedge, and sight along the rake — the sloped edge of the roof — until the straightedge lines up with it. Read the angle and convert: pitch = 12 × tan(angle). A reading of 26.6° is 6/12. It's the least accurate method, good to about half a pitch, which is enough to choose between 5/12 and 7/12 but not between 6/12 and 6.5/12.

The multiplier

Once you have the pitch, the roof area is the footprint times a multiplier, and the multiplier is just the length of the slope per foot of run: √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12.

What it does to an order

Worked example — a 40 × 30 ft house, simple gable, 6/12 pitch. Include the overhang in the footprint: if the eaves stick out a foot on each side, the footprint is 42 × 32, but we'll keep 40 × 30 for clarity.

Now the same house at 8/12: 1,200 × 1.202 = 1,442 sq ft, 15.9 squares with waste → 16 squares, 48 bundles. Three bundles is one more trip and about $120–150 — on a guess.
