Waste Factors: How Much Extra to Buy for Every DIY Material
Why flooring wants 10% and a herringbone floor wants 20%, why gravel wants none, and the one ordering rule that keeps the extra from turning into a second trip.
"Add 10% for waste" is the most repeated line in home improvement, and it's wrong about as often as it's right. Waste isn't one number. It's a different number for every material, because each one is wasted for a different reason: end cuts on planks, breakage on tile, pattern matching on wallpaper, hips and valleys on a roof. Use 10% on a diagonal tile floor and you'll run short; use it on a truckload of gravel and you've paid for a quarter-ton you'll be shoveling into the woods.
What waste actually is
Every waste factor is made of the same five ingredients in different proportions:
- Cuts. Every row that meets a wall ends in a cut, and the offcut is usually too short to start the next row. More walls, angles, and obstacles mean more cuts.
- Pattern. Diagonal, herringbone, and large-repeat patterns throw away more of each piece to keep the pattern aligned.
- Breakage and defects. Tile chips. A box of planks has a bad board or two. A bundle of shingles has a torn one.
- Mistakes. Yours. A miscut, a board laid backwards, a sheet dropped on a corner.
- Repair stock. A box left over in the garage is what lets you fix a damaged plank in five years without hunting for a discontinued color. That's not waste; it's insurance, and it's why some pros deliberately over-order.
Waste factor by material

The ordering rule: waste first, then round
The order matters more than people expect. Add the waste percentage to the square footage first, then convert to the units you buy and round up. Doing it the other way — rounding to boxes, then adding 10% of the boxes — under-orders on small jobs because the percentage is being taken of a number that's already been rounded down inside each box.
Worked example: 300 sq ft of luxury vinyl plank laid diagonally, in boxes of 20.06 sq ft.
- No waste at all: 300 ÷ 20.06 = 14.96 → 15 boxes. You will run out on the last row.
- Right way: 300 × 1.15 = 345 sq ft; 345 ÷ 20.06 = 17.2 → 18 boxes.
Three boxes' difference on one small room — and the third box is the one you'll be glad of when a plank gets gouged. The flooring calculator applies the pattern waste before it counts boxes, for exactly this reason.
When under-buying costs more than over-buying
With most cut materials, running short is the expensive outcome, not buying extra:
- Dye lots. Flooring, tile, carpet, wallpaper, and even shingles vary by production run. Two boxes bought a month later will not match the first ten, and the mismatch shows exactly where it's most visible: the last row.
- Discontinuations. Colors and patterns disappear. The extra box is often the only one that will ever exist.
- Returns. Unopened boxes of stock items are usually returnable. Special orders usually aren't. That asymmetry means the cost of over-ordering stock material is a second trip to the return desk; the cost of under-ordering is a visible seam forever.
When to add nothing
Bulk aggregates — mulch, gravel, sand, topsoil, and to a degree concrete — aren't cut, so a percentage makes no sense. The uncertainty is depth, not offcuts: a bed you meant to mulch at 3 inches will average 3¼ once you're working over roots and dips. Add that as depth in the calculator rather than as a percentage on top, because the two produce different numbers and only one of them reflects what's actually happening in the yard. Where each calculator puts the waste input
Every calculator that involves cutting has a waste control, defaulted to the typical number in the table above and adjustable. If your room is a complicated shape, your roof has three valleys, or you're laying your first floor and want an honest margin for mistakes — set it higher. The default is the trade's number for a competent installer on an average job. You know which parts of that describe your project.
