Where a sod job goes over budget
- Ground prep is the hidden cost. Killing the old lawn, tilling, grading, and adding topsoil can equal the sod itself. Sod laid on unprepared ground fails, so this isn't the place to save.
- Delivery is time-sensitive, not just a fee. Sod is a living product cut within a day or two of delivery. If it sits stacked on the pallet through a hot weekend, it can go in green and still die.
- Buy by the pallet past about 400 sq ft. Pallet pricing is meaningfully cheaper per square foot, and most suppliers won't break a pallet anyway.
- Watering is a real cost too. New sod needs daily watering for two to three weeks. On a metered supply in summer, that shows up on the bill.
- Seed costs a tenth as much — it just takes a season and looks rough getting there. Sod is buying time, which is a legitimate thing to buy.
How to Calculate Sod
Sod is ordered in square feet, delivered as rolls on pallets — and it's cut fresh, so the order has to be right the first time:
- Measure the area. Length × width per section; π × radius² for circles; add all sections.
- Add waste. 5% for clean rectangles, 10% for curves and obstacles.
- Convert: ÷ 10 for rolls, ÷ pallet size (usually 450 sq ft) for pallets — confirm the pallet size with your farm.

Sod needed = area × (1 + waste %)
Rolls = ceil(sod ÷ 10) · Pallets = ceil(sod ÷ pallet size)
Worked example — 50 × 20 ft lawn: 1,000 sq ft × 1.05 = 1,050 sq ft → 105 rolls = 3 pallets (450 sq ft each).

- Kill and clear the old lawn, then grade 1″ below walks and driveways so the sod sits flush.
- Loosen the top 2–4″ of soil and rake smooth — sod roots can't punch into compacted dirt.
- Lay it like brick. Stagger joints, butt seams tight without stretching, and cut borders with a utility knife.
- Water immediately — within 30 minutes of laying, soaking through to the soil, then daily for the first two weeks.
- Stay off it for 2–3 weeks until a gentle tug meets resistance — that's roots taking hold.
